Community Activists

It was wonderful to see many of our community-based events and activities resume this year following the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Whilst lockdowns during 2021 in some areas did result in further postponements or cancellations, our supporters rallied to get back to doing what they’re committed to – raising money and spreading awareness for our research.

Many supporters held their own fundraising events for family and friends, participated in sporting events, played golf and took up our cooking challenge!

Golfers around Australia celebrated their return to golf by participating in our event, Tee Off for Breast Cancer Trials. Now in its 26th year, this event suffered in 2020 due to the extensive lockdowns and social gathering rules which is why we’re delighted that 121 golf clubs and their members participated in 2021, raising an incredible $198,000!

This special event has now raised $2.82 million since the first Tee Off event was held in 1996. Thank you to golf clubs nationwide for their ongoing dedication and commitment to saving lives from breast cancer.

Nothing could stop our dedicated Pink Champions who drove fast cars, rode bikes, ran marathons, shaved their heads and cooked three courses to support our research in 2021.

In response to a diagnosis of breast cancer which turned her life upside down, Kate created ‘30 for 30’. Feeling that no one should have to go through what she has, Kate reached out to her friends and family asking them to sponsor her as she rode 30kms a day over her 30 sessions of radiation treatment. Kate’s efforts and the generosity of her community raised $32,400 for our research program.

Chloe Wade created #RUN4FRAN in honour of her Aunt who passed away from breast cancer at just 45. Her Aunt had always wanted to run a marathon and was in training before she died. Chloe stepped up and started training so that she could complete her aunt’s dream. Chloe ran 42.2 kms and raised $7,550.

Josh Cappiello created ‘Shave for Shelly’ in honour of his beautiful mum, Michelle (Shelly) Cappiello who was diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer in 2021. The news came as a complete shock to everyone, so 21 of their amazing friends and family either shaved, cut or coloured their hair to support Shelly and together raised $18,400 for breast cancer research. An amazing result!

Race For A Cure, a fundraising initiative created by Ben, Toula and Michael Kavich, raised an impressive $22,000 in 2021! Brothers Ben and Michael hit the track at the Bathurst 6 Hour race on Mount Panorama in their pink liveried car, proudly sponsored this year by Yellow Pages. The Kavich family has now raised over $102,000 since 2017.

The 3 Course Challenge was held in 2021 with budding chefs, food lovers and those connected to the cause invited to take part. We were thrilled with the support from our wonderful community who raised over $165,000! This unique fundraising initiative challenged people to cook a three-course meal, host a dinner party and ask their friends and family to support them by donating to breast cancer research. Hosts were supported by Masterchef alumni Sarah Todd (pictured) in a special, online cooking class. Sarah’s own mum Lorraine was diagnosed with breast cancer 13 years ago.

The 2022 edition of The Australian Women’s Health Diary had another successful year of sales raising net funds of $862,000. Funds raised by this diary, a staggering $17.88 million since the first edition in 1999, has made possible research advances in the treatment of breast cancer available to people today. Sales were again strong thanks to our loyal and growing customer base. We acknowledge and thank our distribution partners – newsagents nationally, Woolworths, Australia Post and Magshop for their ongoing support. Special thanks to The Australian Women’s Weekly which has helped us to produce every edition, and to Lisa Wilkinson our Diary Ambassador for her generous support. And a big thank you to everyone who purchased the diary, and the dedicated team of people who produce this wonderful resource each year.
